1. Indole was condensed to form 3-dimethylaminomethyl indole, and then condensed to form ethyl α - carboxylate - β (3-indole) - N-acetyl - α - alanine ethyl ester, which was hydrolyzed, decarboxylated and then hydrolyzed to form DL tryptophan.
